Diplomas Issued by Purpose School

Students can receive a regular Dogwood Diploma or an Adult Graduation Diploma (if over the age of 18) from the Purpose Secondary School upon completion of the required course work.  This diploma allows access to secondary education programs at the many colleges and Universities.

The adult student will receive an Adult Dogwood at the completion of this program.

Students can also receive an Evergreen Diploma which indicates high school completion.

Academic Programs

Course Selection

Students are required to earn 80 credits through grades 10 – 12.

2004 Graduation Program

Required Courses:
(80 credits over Grades 10, 11, and 12)

48 required credits:

  • a Language Arts 10 (4 credits)
  • a Language Arts 11 (4 credits)
  • a Languages Arts 12 (4 credits)
  • Social Studies 10 (4 credits)
  • a Social Studies 11 or 12 (4 credits)
  • a Mathmatics 10 (4 credits)
  • a Mathmatics 11 or 12 (4 credits)
  • Science 10 (4 credits)
  • a Science 11 or 12 (4 credits)
  • Planning 10 (4 credits)
  • Physical Education 10 (4 credits)
  • Fine Arts or Applied Skills 10, 11 or 12 (4 credits)

Elective Credits:
Students must earn at least 28 elective credits. These credits can be for:

  • Earn 4 graduation graduation transitions credits
  • Complete a minimum of 28 elective credits

An unlimited number of credits from board or independent school authority-authorized or post-secondary electives may count toward graduation.

A minimum of 16 credits from either ministry or board authority-authorized or post-secondary courses are required at the grade 12 level.

Five Graduation Program Exams in Grades 10 – 12 are required for graduation, including English 12.

FAQ

Are there tuition fees at Purpose?

No. There are no fees for students.

Is Purpose School close to public transportation?

Yes.  Purpose School is one short block from the New Westminster Station Skytrain.

Can I graduate from Purpose?

Purpose fully subscribes to the the Ministry of Education guidelines for Independent Schools. Once the Provincial graduation requirements are met, students receive the British Columbia Dogwood Diploma. Just as in the public school system, Purpose students must complete 80 credits in grade ten, eleven and twelve.

Can I go to Post Secondary Education with my Purpose Education?

Yes, many Purpose students go on to community colleges, universities and trades programs.

What is required to get into Purpose?

Students should be between the ages of 13 and 19 to attend Purpose.

How many classes does a full-time student take?

Purpose is on a quarter system. Students are enrolled in two courses at a time: one in the morning, one in the afternoon.  Each course lasts nine weeks, then students move on to two new courses.  Students who attend for the whole year complete eight courses.

What grades are taught at Purpose?

Purpose offers courses at the grade 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 level.

Do I get full credit for course completion?

Yes. All courses taught at Purpose are recognized by the Ministry of Education and they count towards high school completion and the BC Dogwood Diploma. All teachers at Purpose have their B.C. teaching credentials.

Why do students choose Purpose over other schools?

Purpose Secondary School is available to students from all over the Lower Mainland. Students come to Purpose because the public system, or their previous school, did not work for them.
Many students prefer to learn in a smaller educational setting with smaller classes. We are a school community supporting students emotionally as well as academically.
